Screening and Testing for Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C often has no symptoms. Getting screened and tested is the only way to know if you have hepatitis C.

Testing for Hepatitis C

The CDC recommends hepatitis C testing for all adults, pregnant women, and anyone who may have been recently exposed to hepatitis C. If you’ve been diagnosed with hepatitis C, it’s important to begin treatment immediately. Learn more about hepatitis C testing here.

  • Getting tested for hepatitis C is the only way to find out if you have HCV infection.
  • You should get tested for hepatitis C at least once in your life.
  • Some people may need periodic testing.
  • If you find out you have hepatitis C, your doctor can give you lifesaving treatment.

Why Get Tested for Hepatitis C?

Getting tested for hepatitis C is essential, especially if you think you’ve been exposed to the virus. Early diagnosis allows your doctor to begin treatment right away, helping to prevent serious health complications.

If left untreated, chronic hepatitis C can lead to severe liver damage, cirrhosis, liver cancer, and even death.

Because many people with hepatitis C have no symptoms, testing is the only way to know for sure if you are infected.

Where to Get Tested for Hepatitis C

For initial testing, contact Healthy Concepts Clinic at 409.978.4203 or call the ID Care Coordinator at 409.978.4031. Healthy Concepts Clinic provides confidential testing for hepatitis C, HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea for a $10 visit fee. Both cash and credit are accepted.

If your test results are positive, start your individualized care at Coastal Health & Wellness.

1. Get Tested

  • Hep C testing involves two steps:
1.) Antibody Test – A quick finger prick or blood test to check if you've had Hep C before.
2.) RNA Test – A blood test to confirm if you currently have Hep C.

2. See a Doctor

  • Visit Coastal Health & Wellness or your primary care provider to understand how Hep C affects your health and get personalized care.

3. Get the Right Treatment

  • Hep C treatment usually involves taking pills for less than three months with minimal side effects.
  • Your provider will work with you to determine the best medication for you.

4. Get Ready to Start Treatment

  • Reduce alcohol and drug use.
  • Ensure you have a safe place to store your medication.
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle – eat well, rest, and seek support from friends and family.

5. Get Your Care Covered

  • Your Care Coordinator can help get your care covered either through your insurance or, for those uninsured, through our Patient Assistance Program.

6. Get Cured!

  • New medications can cure Hep C in more than 95% of patients.
