Following approvals from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Federal Drug Administration (FDA), Galveston County Health District (GCHD) and Coastal Health & Wellness (CHW) this week will begin administering COVID-19 vaccines for children ages 6 months to 5 years old.
Moderna vaccines will be available beginning Wednesday, June 22 and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines on Friday, June 24 at the GCHD Immunizations Clinic, 9850-B Emmett F. Lowry Expressway, Suite B-104 in Texas City. Walk-ins are welcome.
CHW will have Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines available beginning Friday, June 24 for established patients in Texas City at 9850-C Emmett F. Lowry Expressway and in Galveston at 4700 Broadway, Suite F100. Appointments are required.
The FDA has determined both vaccines are effective against severe disease while demonstrating excellent safety profile.
The Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines have different schedules and are not interchangeable.
- Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is for young children 6 months through 4 years of age. It is a three-dose primary series with doses one and two given three weeks apart and the third dose given at least eight weeks after the second. Each dose is 0.2 mL after dilution.
- Moderna COVID-19 vaccine is for young children 6 months through 5 years of age. It is a two-dose primary series (0.25 mL per dose) administered one month apart. The vaccine is also authorized to provide a third primary series dose (0.25 mL) to young children 6 months through 5 years of age who are immunocompromised to be administered at least one month following the second dose.
Parents and guardians may also request a COVID-19 vaccine for their children from their pediatrician, primary care provider or local pharmacy. If your child is eligible and has yet to receive their primary COVID-19 vaccine series, getting them vaccinated can help protect them from potential severe illness, hospitalization and death.
